SHOW!!

crying..

If you have ever seen David Lynch's Mulholland Drive, you may remember the scene in club Silencio when a female opera singer performs a Spanish version of Roy Orbison's Crying.

Well, first of all, this scene is rediculous..the movie as a whole is one of my favorites of all time.

What I want to point out here...and what blows my mind the most about this track...is that it is the exact take from the "audition" when David Lynch heard it for the first time...

The woman who sings the song is Rebekah Del Rio.

"When I met David (Lynch) that fateful morning I was not aware that he was recording my voice. I sang with all of my heart and soul and I left very shortly after. Little did I know that the recording would haunt David to the point of writing a special part in his then pilot, “Mulholland Drive”. It was such a thrill to receive the phone call from my faithful friend and agent, Brian Loucks at CAA while I was struggling in Nashville to say that David wanted me to fly to L.A. and film my part."

Indamixx Laptop is First Pre-Configured Music Netbook, Running Linux, $499

Five hundred bucks. In music tech terms, that usually gets you, what, a single app bundle? Now, it can get you a whole computer, pre-loaded with a bunch of music software. It may not be as powerful as a modern laptop, but it’s also in a cute, smaller form factor you can keep everywhere in case inspiration strikes, or balance on the corner of your Steinway grand. Meet the Indamixx laptop. Whether you want one or not, it’s emblematic of the ongoing commoditization of laptop technology, with ever-cheaper, lower-power brains.

Highlights:

  • Brains: 1.6Ghz Intel Atom CPU netbook (looks similar to the Asus, but it’s actually Sylvania)
  • energyXT bundled: Runs energyXT, the awesome music production workstation with modular features and some unique editing capabilities – sort of the “indie” electronic music workstation of choice
  • Full laptop-like specs: a full complement of I/O including 3 USB ports; an 80 GB hard drive (not bad for a machine this size!)
  • Custom Linux distro + apps: Tons of pre-configured Linux music production software running on a custom distribution called “Transmission” – with Hydrogen Drums, Ardour DAW, DJ software Mixxx (that’s three x’s to Indamixx’s’s two – don’t ask), and lots of other lovely tools
  • Sounds pre-loaded: 2900 drum sounds, 350 samples + scratches
  • Import sessions: The new Ardour Xchange imports from your existing DAW (worth its own article, I think!)
  • Broadcast your sets: Included Internet console for streaming your live gigs, etc.
  • Hosts Windows VSTs: An included Windows-compatible host for your existing plug-ins
  • Bundle: includes 1GB SD card, free carrying case, free US shipping, a t-shirt, and 30 days software support while you get it set up

$499 for the whole bundle – stuff like Ardour Xchange alone lists for US$75, energyXT is commercial, and you get these other goodies, as well (the memory card, case, etc.). So I think this is very competitively priced.

We here at PARAGRAPH don't only listen to dance music.
Exhibit A:

Conversion Party is a Brooklyn/Connecticut based garage/indie rock band. I know, I'm using "indie" to describe this genre of music. Somebody should do something to stop that.

These boys recently put out a cool little album called More No More with songs ranging from short energetic jams to harmony-filled nuggets.

check out the album here

and listen to a track here
Rabbit, Run

Exhibit B:

This dude Koushik is a Canadian hip-hop musician that's worked with Four Tet, Caribou, and Madvillain.

This song is pretty chill. It's called Be With.

Exhibit C:

James Brown has an album of some rad instrumentals. The Chicken is one of those instrumentals, and it's just right.

MJ

Michael Jackson.

Speaking of remixes and re-edits, I was on WavesAtNight.com and I came across a great mix of MJ's Get on The Floor that was done by a fine Brooklyn group called Holy Ghost! This DFA supported duo has been making hot remixes of everything from Michael Jackson to Moby or MGMT. They don't only do "M" letter music...there are others...and even originals...if you enjoy dance...HOLY GHOST! is a group to investigate.

The song, alone, is the ba-bomb!
...this remix does it justice in every sense of the word.

Oh!!!...and by the way...we were in a deli recently and caught a newspaper caption that read :
MICHAEL JACKSON 6 WEEKS TO LIVE
I typed in "Michael Jackson Dying" into a google search and it looks as though it may be true...I mean...internet true...let's just hope for the best and see what happens...if you want to send us a "Get Well Soon Michael" card...we'll make sure that it goes up on this page...I can't promise it will get to Michael Jackson.

<3 good night...here is the song.

Micheal Jackson - Get on the Floor (Holy Ghost! Edit)

P.S. Sorry for all this streaming nonsense...we'll have you downloading in no time. I will also have some fun paragraph stuff to talk about soon. Pictures, demos, info, etc....so stay tuned. xoxo

Faithfull

I really love a track called Broken English by a chick named Marianne Faithfull...

The song is just a very steady force "probably" more suited for car dancing...not bar dancing...although it is fun...late night...you can throw it into a mix at a familiar venue to see the reactions of the people that you know so well.

Well..anyway..these uncertainties that you may have can be put away in a Jordan shoe box under your bed, my friend. I just found a dance remix of Broken English that is just simply bangin'. The dude responsible goes by Baron von Luxxury. ha. Besides this gem, he also has done work on Glass Candy, Daft Punk, Giorgio Moroder...and more...

www.myspace.com/baronvonluxxury

I love these kinds of remixes...I'm talkin' about the ones that just take the song to that next level...no major changes...the song is still the song...but now you can 1-2 step and DJs can live happily...it almost can read more like a re-edit than a re-mix.

If you know the original, I think you will agree..but..Whatev brah. Here is the song. Enjoy!

There are songs in Chichewa, Swahili, Portuguese and English, the latter two a result of collaborations with Marina Vello (formerly of Bonde do Role) and MIA.

CaLL Me

It is monday. Happy Martin Luther King Day. To celebrate, Mike and I are travelling to Princeton, NJ to pick up a guitar rack (Danny) and a guitar tuner (Mike). We heard that the BEST BUY over there started a new thing where they sell instruments and accesories. It's worth an investigation...

So...you are most likely off from work and school today....so...relax...stick around home for a while and find some new music. It will feel good.
To start you off, I have attached a song that caught my ear...bigtime. I can't get over how much I like this song. It's older, but the production value is so killer...man oh man...just take a listen...
The band is an old UK duo called Mighty 7 and the song is called CALL ME.

"I'm not sure why this record doesn't turn up more often, as it was released on EMI, a major label, but I think the story goes that it came out as a limited promo. It was written and produced by Gee Bello, seen above on the right with Nat Augustin, who is an important figure in the UK jazz funk scene and member of still performing act Light Of The World. Mighty 7 was a studio project that he worked on after Light Of The World were on a hiatus."
